Capital Area Greenbelt Detour

Greenbelt Detour

Due to upcoming construction work along the Capital Area Greenbelt near the PennDOT building, the Capital Area Greenbelt Association is working with the City of Harrisburg on a detour path to ensure Greenbelt usage through South Harrisburg.

A recommended alternate route, beginning Monday, November 13, includes using S. Front, Sycamore, Cameron, and Shanois Streets, before picking up with the Greenbelt again near the train bridge. Detour signage will be posted along the route. The trail will be close to traffic between the entry point south of the Interstate 83 South Bridge and where the Greenbelt meets with Shanois Street next to the Paxton Creek.

“This is being done for everyone’s safety,” said City of Harrisburg Communications Director Matt Maisel. “With construction ongoing along the Greenbelt, it would not be safe for anyone walking, jogging, or riding their bike to go through an active construction zone. The current detour path uses the least amount of roadway possible to get users back on the trail.”

The detour will go into effect after the Harrisburg Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, November 12, which uses a portion of the Greenbelt trail near PennDOT.

There is no timetable for the duration of the closure. The Greenbelt Association is working with the City and other partners to determine the future path of the trail in the area which is currently under development.
