Make a Difference: Bring K-9 Officers Back to Susquehanna Township

You can make a difference in Susquehanna Township by donating to return K-9 “officers” to our police department. We need to raise $50,000 to acquire two K-9s and support nationally certified, best-practice training and equipment for the dogs and their human partners.

Your contribution will have a BIG impact! K-9 officers help deter crime, preserve peace and serve as ambassadors in the community. These dogs will work on search and rescue missions, track missing persons, perform illegal drug and explosive detection, and help detain individuals fleeing from crimes in progress. You can also expect to see our dogs as out and about as furry participants in Susquehanna Township Police Department’s ongoing community engagement activities.

It’s been nearly ten years since our last K-9 officer retired from the force. Since then, we’ve had to rely on other municipalities when K-9 officers are needed. Today, our police department is well-positioned to reestablish a successful K-9 officer program. We have several members of the police force interested in investing their time and hearts into being part of the dogs’ care, training, and professional engagement.

Your generous, tax-deductible contribution is needed to make our K-9 officer program possible. Help us bring two K-9 officers to our community and ensure our police department best serves everyone who calls Susquehanna Township home.

Thank you for your support!

FAQs

  • Why does Susquehanna Township need a K-9 Officer?
    • Adding a K-9 unit will enhance the department’s ability to respond to emergencies and prevent crime. Having K-9 officers will eliminate our reliance on other police departments for K-9s to provide their unique capabilities and training.
  • What will the K-9 Officer do?
    • K-9 officers will be used for search and rescue missions, tracking missing people, drug and explosive detection and officer safety. Susquehanna Township’s K-9 officers and their human handlers will also continue the township’s tradition of active, positive community engagement by being highly visible at community events and in schools. Susquehanna Township’s K-9 officers will be friendly, furry faces teaching citizens of all ages that police officers are here to help.
  • How can my donation help?
    • Monetary donations from local businesses and community members will cover the acquisition of the K-9 officers and provide specialized training and equipment for both the dogs and their human partners. This program will not be covered by taxpayer dollars and will only be possible through the community’s generosity.
  • What will the process look like?
    • The K-9 officers are acquired at about one year of age, with some initial training already under their belt. Once matched with their human partner, the dogs and their human officers will receive further training from the Muddy River Canine Academy in Perry County, PA. After several months of training and certification, the K-9 officers are approved for active duty and placed on shift. When not on the job, the K-9 officers will live with their human partners.
