Post-Construction Stormwater Management

Helpful Resource for PCSM!
Green Infrastructure
Green infrastructure and low impact development are helpful tools in managing stormwater.

Post-construction stormwater management takes into thought the process of how and where stormwater goes as the natural land transforms into developments or if applicable, a redevelopment. With growth comes an increase in paved surfaces which increases stormwater volume and pollutants. To avoid these increases it is advised to implement practices or facilities that treat, store, and infiltrate runoff onsite before it enters into waterbodies downstream. EPA has come up with a list of innovative designs that help to reduce paved surfaces, or imperviousness, and other green infrastructure practices as excellent ways to reduce flows and improve water quality.

It is important to keep in mind that as these facilities are created, that long term operation and maintenance are taken into account. These facilities will exist for a long time and it is imperative to their success that they are properly constructed, maintained, and operate as designed.
