Title: Supervisor, Community Technical Services Unit
Sgt Karchnak is in his 20th year as a Pennsylvania police officer. He
started his law enforcement career by serving 3 years in the U.S. Army as an MP
in Germany and stateside. He then served 2 years in a York County police
dept, and 3 years in the Elizabethtown Borough P.D., before joining Susquehanna
Township Police 16 years ago.
Immediately after starting here, Sgt Karchnak (then Patrolman) became a K-9
handler. He continued on with various dogs until relinquishing this duty
due to the large workload our Sergeants take on. He had three dogs serve
with him at Susquehanna, K9 Dan, K9 Nico, and K9 Mutz. Sgt Karchnak is
very active in the United Schutzhund Clubs of America, and is a prizewinning
handler still to this day.
He was promoted to Corporal in 2000, followed by his promotion to Sergeant in
2003. He was the commander of A Platoon until he transferred to run the
Community Technical Services unit, where he serves currently. While he
does not have a K9 with him now, he is still the K9 unit supervisor and chief
trainer.
Sgt Karchnak has received various awards including the Life Saving Award, PT
Award (multiple years), and the prestigious Drew Comrey Order of Honor Medal
from Chief Martin. He is the JNET Tac officer, which is the chief liaison
for the whole department's access to restricted Penndot documents and
files. He also is a member of the recently formed Honor Guard unit.
