Emergency Evacuation Plan

What to Do If You Hear a 3 to 5 Minute Steady or Warble Siren Tone:

Step 1: Turn on your radio or television to an Emergency Alert Station AM- WHP 580 FM- WRRV 97.3
Step 2: Listen for official information and instructions for Dauphin County.
Step 3: Follow instructions of emergency officials. You may be asked to: Take Shelter / Stay Indoors or Evacuate.

School Information:

Special plans have been developed to protect school children in the event of an emergency. Please contact your child's school principal or district superintendent and request this important information now.

You are urged not to call or go to the schools during an emergency.

  • If an evacuation is recommended while classes are in session, the students will be bused to a designated host school outside the effected area. This will serve as the student pick-up point where you can take custody of your children.
  • The students will be cared for at the designated host school until parents arrive to pick them up.
  • Students attending school outside the effected area, but who live in within the effected zone, will not be sent home during an emergency. They will remain under school supervision until parents pick them up at the school's designated location.

Specific information concerning student pick-up points is provided to parents by school officials.

If You Are Asked to Take Shelter:

  • Go inside and stay there.
  • Close all outside doors and windows.
  • Turn off air intakes such as fans and air conditioners.
  • Keep pets inside.
  • Do not use telephone except for personal emergencies (including cellular phones).
  • If you are not at home, take the best available shelter.
  • Stay indoors until you receive official notice that it is safe to go out.
  • Stay tuned to your Emergency Alert Station.
  • Keep an extra set of car keys handy.

If You Are Asked to Evacuate:

Emergency officials will let you know if evacuation is necessary. If you are asked to evacuate, follow directions calmly and promptly. Special arrangements will be made for the sick and disabled.

If You Need a Ride:

Try to go with a neighbor or a fellow worker. If that is not possible, transportation can be arranged in Susquehanna Township by calling (717) 540-4296. It is recommended that persons with special needs file a special needs form with Susquehanna Township Emergency Management Agency prior to an event.

Plan to spend a minimum of three days away from home. Lock up your home.

Items to Take With You:

  • Clothing fit for the season
  • Sleeping bags or blankets
  • Prescription medicines
  • Special medical equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, etc.
  • Personal care items
  • Baby supplies
  • Flashlight and portable radio with extra batteries
  • Pet supplies*

* For sanitary reasons, pets will not be permitted inside mass care centers, except for service animals such as guide dogs. Go in your car to a friend or relative outside the effected area, or to the reception center identified by the Emergency Alert Broadcast.

Emergency Alert System:

The Emergency Alert System (EAS) will provide you with official information in cases of tornadoes, floods, nuclear plant accidents or other emergencies. Turn on your radio or television for official information and instructions.

Primary Emergency Alert Stations for Dauphin County are:

  • AM - WHP 580

Route alerts may also be used in the event of emergency. A route alert is when an official vehicle (police or fire) drives through areas that may not hear the siren tone. While traveling these areas personnel will make announcements over the public address.
