Shade Tree Commission News

Shade Tree Commission News

The Susquehanna Township Shade Tree Commission (STC) would like to remind residents that certain regulations govern the planting, care, and maintenance of street trees within the Township. This includes trees in the tree lawn of a property (the area between the sidewalk and the street), and trees along public highways.
In a previous newsletter, a revised Shade Tree Ordinance Booklet was enclosed. If you are a new resident or have misplaced your copy, please contact the Township office to obtain a new one, or visit the Township website.

The Commission would like to highlight some of the requirements of the Ordinance for your convenience and as a reminder to you.

1. PRIOR to planting or removing a tree, or disturbing a tree and/or its roots (laying sidewalk or driveway), the homeowner or contractor must submit an application to the Township for review by the STC. If approved, a permit will be granted. Applications are available on the Township website.

2. It is the responsibility of the homeowner to prune trees in their tree lawn area to remove dead branches, and maintain a minimum clearance of branches over streets and sidewalks. Minimum clearance of branches is eight (8) feet above the public sidewalk and fourteen (14) feet above streets and alleys.

3. All tree pruning must be performed according to accepted arborist practices. It is not acceptable to top trees, or have stubs remaining after pruning. In many cases, pruning should only be performed by a commercial tree service.

The Commission is currently conducting an inspection of the Township to determine where there are tree limbs that need to be trimmed, to remove dead branches or to meet the minimum height requirements of the Ordinance. Homeowners will be notified by letter if pruning is required.

Remember that the STC is available as a resource to all residents to assist with any questions regarding street trees, permit requirements, pruning, and tree planting recommendations. They can be reached by calling 909-9226.

Residents are encouraged to plant trees in their yards and tree lawns. As older trees in the Township die, it is very important that they are replaced with young trees to take their place. Without tree replacement, established neighborhoods with tree lined street lose much of their appeal. The STC can assist in selecting the best tree for your planting location.
